We've had problems with bandwidth theft (people linking to our images on other sites). We implemented a security procedure that checks to see if you're on investtech.com when you view an image. If you're on investtech.com it lets you see the images, but if you're not, it won't.

Please note that following the directions below will not compromise the security on your computer as long as you run AntiVirus software and your virus definitions database is frequently updated.

Zone Alarm Pro Users
  1. Go to Privacy
  2. Click on Site List
  3. Select investtech.com (if it's not there you need to add it)
  4. Now select options (bottom right of window)
  5. Uncheck "Remove Private Header Information
  6. Under ad blocking, uncheck banners and skyscrapers"
Norton Internet Security Users
Please try one or both of these if you are using Norton Internet Security:

Allow referer information
Directory traversal problem

Referer information
Some firewalls strip out the referrer information, so even if you're on investtech.com the site has no way of knowing this (since the information is stripped) so it assumes you're not. If you're using a firewall and can't see images, typically a small box with a red cross is shown instead of an image, try these solutions:
  1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
  2. Do one of the following.
    • In Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall 2003, click Options > Internet Security or Personal Firewall (This step is not always needed), and then click the Web Content tab.
    • In Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall 2004, double-click Privacy Control, and then click Advanced.
  3. Click Add Site. A new site/domain box appears.
  4. Enter the name of the site that you want to receive the referrer information (www.investtech.com) and click OK. The site name appears in the left frame of the Options window.
  5. Click the name of the new site.
  6. Click the Global Settings tab.
  7. In the "Information about visited sites" section, clear "Use default settings."
  8. Click Permit.
  9. Click OK to close the Options window.
Problems specifically related to the - URL_Directory_Transversal error from Symantec
The Intrusion Detection feature of NIS and NPF recognizes some functions on certain sites as suspicious traffic and blocks those functions. To permit those functions, add the URL_Directory_Traversal entry to the NIS or NPF signature exclusions list.

To add an entry to the signature exclusions list:
  1. Open NIS or NPF
  2. Click Status & Settings
  3. Double-click Intrusion Detection. You see the Intrusion Detection window
  4. Click Signatures. You see the Intrusions Detection Signature Exclusions window
  5. Find and click the entry URL_Directory_Traversal in the Signatures box
  6. Click Exclude. NIS or NPF moves the URL_Directory_Transversal entry from the Signatures list to the Exclusions list
  7. Click OK, and then click OK again
  8. Close NIS or NPF
Partly blank pages and errors
You may find part of your web page contains errors. This could be one of several issues so you may need to experiment with your settings. First, try Ad Blocking.
  • Open Norton Personal Firewall. Click on the Ad Blocking option and click Turn Off.

If the page loads correctly, you may need to configure your Ad Blocking settings for individual sites. Click Configure and select Advanced. Then add www.investtech.com to the list of sites in a similar way to the Privacy Controls (see below).

If you're having trouble viewing some parts of a web page or whole pages seem to be blank, your firewall is usually causing the problem by blocking cookies and scripts that the website can't work without.

Some sites, including www.investtech.com, use cookies (to control login information) and javascript (to position certain items on the pages). Such elements can be used to track internet browsing habits, which is why some personal firewalls block this kind of information. You can change the settings in Norton Personal Firewall 2004 and Norton Internet Security 2004 to allow this information to be transmitted for specific sites.

  • Open Norton Personal Firewall. Click on the Personal Firewall option and click the configure button in the bottom right hand corner of the window.
  • Click on the 'Networking' tab and click the Trusted button, then click Add.
  • Make sure the 'individually' radio button is checked. Then type www.investtech.com in the box provided and click OK.

Not able to login or blank pages
If the web site forgets your membership level each time you login, try adjusting your firewall's cookie blocking settings. These are located under the Privacy Control setting.

Privacy Control helps keep your personal information screened from other computers. You can block specific information from being sent to websites, in email and attached Microsoft Office files, and via supported instant messaging programs.

You can also choose your level of privacy:

  • Low privacy means you're not warned when your computer sends personal information. Cookies are also allowed, although web browser information is blocked.
  • Medium privacy warns you before sending personal information, but other settings remain the same.
  • High privacy blocks personal information from being sent, as well as web browser information. You are also alerted each time a cookie is created or requested.

Click the Custom Level button to change the cookie settings.

The setting can be adjusted to allow cookies, to send a prompt each time a cookie is sent, or to block them altogether. Blocking cookies can be problematic, however, because some sites (including Investtech.com) need cookies to function. You can allow cookies for individual sites using the Advanced button:

  • Open Norton Personal Firewall.
  • Click on the Privacy Control option and click configure.
  • Click on the Advanced option. This will give you a list of the Web Contents options, including a default list of sites. You'll need to add the site if it isn't already on the list.
  • Click Add Site. Type in www.investtech.com to add it to the list.
  • Click on entry to highlight it.
  • Then click the Global Settings tab. Untick the Use default settings tickbox, which can be found under 'Information about your browser'. Then check Permit. Click OK.
