RSI är en god momentumindikator

Aktier som har fått högt RSI, över den kritiska 70-nivån, har fortsatt att stiga framöver. Samtidigt har aktier med lågt RSI, under den kritiska 30-nivån, fortsatt prestera svagare än börsen framöver. Det visar en forskningsrapport från Investtech baserat på 23 år med data från Oslobörsen och 16 år med data från Sverige, Danmark och Finland.

RSI är en frekvent använd indikator inom teknisk analys. Förkortningen RSI står för Relative Strength Index och är ett mått på hur väl en aktie gått mot sig själv. Talet beräknas genom att se på styrkan på uppgångsdagarna i förhållande till styrkan på nedgångsdagarna över en bestämd period, vilket genererar ett värde mellan 0 och 100.

Många investerare menar att RSI kan ge indikationer om att aktier har stigit eller fallit för mycket, och skall reagera tillbaka. Investtechs forskning antyder att en sådan överköpt- översålt-tolkning statistiskt inte stämmer med verkligheten. Resultaten visar att RSI är en god indikator på om aktien har positivt momentum eller negativt momentum och därför att RSI-momentum är en god indikator på framtida kursutveckling.

Vi har studerat 35 733 fall där RSI21 passerat över 70-gränsen och 23 590 fall där RSI21 passerat under 30-gränsen. Vi kallade strategin RSI-momentum och ansatte köpsignal när RSI passerade över 70 och säljsignal när RSI passerade under 30.

Tabellen nedan visar genomsnittlig årlig meravkastning efter RSI-momentumsignaler. Tabellen baseras på kvartalstalen, dvs. avkastning 66 handelsdagar (3 månader) efter signal.

Sammantaget indikerar resultaten att RSI lämpar sig väl som momentumindikator och att investeringar baserade på köpsignaler från RSI-momentum ger statistiskt bättre avkastning än genomsnittlig börsavkastning.
